Halkidiki is often sought after by adventurous travelers looking for great hiking trails, unique coastlines, and other natural wonders. It is also a popular destination for families since its cosmopolitan towns are usually adorned with quiet yet beautiful beaches, lush mountains, quaint cafes, restaurants, and hotels.

For this reason, most visitors traveling to Halkidiki arrived in Greece by plane.

Unfortunately, Halkidiki does not have an airport, so travelers might get confused about how to get there. But fear not, the second biggest airport in continental Greece is Thessaloniki airport and is the closest to Halkidiki. Depending on where in Halkidiki you are traveling to, you will need 30 minutes to two hours to get to Halkidiki by car.

SKG, Thessaloniki’s airport, is about 12 km away from the center of Thessaloniki. Usually one would need about 40 minutes to get from the airport to the center, but that also depends on the traffic jam.

If you are travelling from Thessaloniki to Halkidiki, it is recommended to rent a car for convenience. But also because the ride is stunning. Halkidiki’s landscapes of hidden little villages amongst pine trees and mountain ranges, the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea, and the beautiful coastlines of the peninsulas are worth the drive.

Distances at Halkidiki

From Thessaloniki or SKG to arrive at the area of Nea Moudania is about 30 minutes. With five more minutes, you are at Potidea village. The famous Sani resort at the Kassandra peninsula is only a 50-minute ride. On the other hand, while driving towards the Sithonia peninsula, the speed limit is relatively low due to mainly crossing villages.

To get to Neos Marmaras, you will need about one hour and 15 minutes. To Vourvourou, it is about one hour and 20 minutes. However, the ride is undoubtedly outstanding.

Lastly, to get to the last leg and peninsula of Halkidiki, Mount Athos, the road is very graphical. You will cross many parts and turns of woods, natural wonders, picturesque villages, and stunning beaches.

The distance for Ouranoupolis town is near to two hours but worth it.
